San Diego High School (Performing Arts School)

On March 2nd, sixty eight San Diego High - MVPA students saw a performance of Stickfly at 10th Ave. theater.  The performance was followed by a classroom visit from the lead actor, Hassan El-Amin, and Mo'olelo Performing Arts producer and director Seema Sueko.

Student Shappelle Strothers received payment for being in a commercial that she taped as part of a video audition for a private group that supposedly had over one hundred video auditions for only five spots.

June 3rd at 6:45 PM and June 4th at 5 PM will be our music revue titled "Disney Dreams."

Last February, San Diego High - MVPA received a $600 electric piano through donorschoose.org.  The piano is being used in the after school choir and an after school piano club, and will ultimately be used for our June music revue.

This will be the last year of Dr. Walter Stump?s incredible and informative Historical Theatre Pub Crawl, an event not to be missed! There will be other optional activities announced in class.  (www.visitlondon.com and www.tkts.co.uk)

PROGRAM: Many aspects of Readers Theatre will be explored including Scriptmaking, Staging, Directing, Performance, Methodology, etc., for all educational levels and for those whose primary interest is in creative activity and/or recreation. 1.2.11

What's the buzz?  Tell me what's a happening!
Let me know what is going on at your site in regards to next year.  Do you think you'll get a pink slip or be excessed?  Are your sections of theatre being cut back?  Do you have to pick up another subject?  Are you planning to retire?  Are you losing your extended day pay?  Or maybe things are looking great for you!  No matter what, I want to know!

Advocacy for your program is key right now.  Rally the parents and have them make their support known to the principal and site council.  With the sight based budget and principals making tough decisions, this is more important than ever.  Have students give curtain speeches at your performances explaining the importance of the work and how being part of your program has benefited them.  Ask the students and teachers to write to the school board members as well.

But the best thing you can do right now is RECRUIT!  Numbers speak louder than anything else.  If you have the enrollment in your classes, the program is much less likely to get cut.  Please write to share your most effective recruitment techniques.  Organize your students to do a flash mob performance at lunch and then hand out flyers to promote your classes.  Ask to have kids go into English classes to do a scene and recruit.  What other ideas do you have?

Remember that the arts are a curricular subject.  They are core, not extra or enrichment.  They are required in the A-G that the school board wants to make mandatory for graduation and is currently required for UC and CSU application.  Theatre is called out by name in the NCLB documents both nationally and at the state level.  Theatre classes can keep kids in school, boosting ADA which translates to dollars.  Make sure  you have facts to back up the necessity your program and that you're not just whining to keep your job.  That will be heard by the powers that be in a much more meaningful way.

Illustrated Theatre Production Guide  By: John Holloway
This invaluable guide takes a step-by-step approach to many common theatre production practices and covers important issues related to the construction of wooden, fabric, plastic and metal scenery used in stage plays. Illustrated Theatre Production Guide contains a brief history of physical theatres and the development of various forms such as thrust, proscenium and black box venues. Operation of theatre equipment is covered in detail in the chapters on rigging and curtains. Instructions for operating a fly system and basic stagehand skills such as knot tying and drapery folding, are clearly outlined. The use of metal tubing as a structural element is explored as an alternative to wooden scenery. The chapter on lighting discusses electrical theory as well as the practical aspects of hanging and focusing lights. The final chapter in Illustrated Theatre Production Guide is a compilation of many different projects that are easy to approach and to complete, and have practical value for a theatre group.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope you had a lovely holiday break with lots of deserved rest and good cheer!  I was in New York for the big blizzard.  It was quite and adventure!

DramaFEST and TechFEST

These are two great events put on by the San Diego Educational Theatre Association and hosted by Grossmont College Theatre Department.

DramaFEST will be on January 29th this year.  This event focuses on actors.  They prepare and perform scenes and monologues for evaluation and feedback.  For more information on this event contact SDETA President Elect Rob Dellorfano at rdellorfano@smusd.org.

TechFEST will be on February 12th.  This event focuses on technical theatre students.  They participate in workshops and the "Tech Olympics".  For more info on this event contact SDETA Past President Kristen Giard at kgiard@guhsd.net.

These two events are part of the qualification for becoming a Bravissimo Distinguished Theatre Program.  For more info on how to apply for that honor visit the SDETA website.

Teaching High School Theatre

Your seniors who are applying to performing arts schools are probably working hard preparing audition material.  Now is the time to go over audition etiquette, resumes and portfolios, and interview strategies.  Help them make the school to work transition and these skills will serve them well whether or not they pursue a career in theatre.

Check out these articles from Dramatics Magazine to inspire and inform your students.

Technical Resume and Portfolio

Teaching Middle School Theatre

If you have been following the course outline for Theatre 1-2, you will be in or approaching Unit V which is all about Short Rehearsed Performances.   Consider having your students retell/rewrite familiar stories.  Remember "Fractured Fairy Tales" from the "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show?"  Check them out on YouTube!  Or visit the written versions.  Have your students choose their own favorite fairy/folk tale and create a new, funky version.  Complete with some historical research, rehearsal, prop creation and performance and you've hit almost all of the standards!

Here are some other sites you can visit to adapt fairy tales from around the world:

Cinderella Stories from Around the World; Russian Fairy Tales;
Fairy Tales Around the World

Teaching Elementary School Theatre

Integration is a big topic in the VAPA office on a daily basis.  We currently have two grants to write curriculum integrating the arts disciplines with both English Language Learning and with Science.  This project takes up much of my days as I try to master the science before I can even figure out how to integrate it!  :o)

One of the most effective integrations you can do at the elementary level is to use children's picture books as scene starters.  Reading the story and having students create tableaux from the illustrations strengthens understanding of the text as well as character, plot and setting.  Visit this site for specific ideas:  Drama from Picture Books.
